5th Division Headquarters

I'm researching Pte Small (1st Bn Norfolk Regt) - he spent 6 months in 1915 with 174 Coy RE before being attached to HQ. 5th Div (soon after a visit by the GOC 5th Div)

Where was the HQ located between Dec 1915 and July 1917.

The War diary for 1917 - inidcates some shelling of the rear areas - which would co-incide with his down grading from A1 to B and being posted to the Labour Corps (Employment Coy).

Would HQ position have been as a messenger or a more clerical role?

5th Division was with the Canadian Corps during and just after the famous Vimy Ridge operation of April 1917. They formed the Corps Reserve during the initial assault, although the 13th Brigade was detached and advanced on Z day. Division Headquarters during this period was at BRUAY until 6 p.m. on 8th April when it moved to CHATEAU D'ACQ.

Copies of some Divisional War Diaries for the periods they were with the Canadian Corps are available on the Canadian Archives web site, although you may already have seen them. The link is this:
