Kazzy Posted 29 September , 2012 Share Posted 29 September , 2012 I have been researching a James Gamble who was born in Londonderry in 1892, was living in Glasgow in 1901 where I believe his father had an accident which left him invalided. James was a shirt cutter on the 1911 Census in Ireland but appears to have joined the West Yorkshire Reg. He was in D Company, 10th Battalion. Was this one of the Irish Battalions or was it made up of men from a shirt manufacturers or a mixture of professions? Any ideas anyone? I have his medal rolls card but there appears to be no service record for him so am unsure where he was living.
sjustice Posted 1 October , 2012 Share Posted 1 October , 2012 Hello Kazzy, Welcome to the forum. I can't advise on the specifics of your question outside the fact that the 'terrible tenth' seems to be founded, but by no means exclusively, on men from the heavier industries of northern England. David Stowe wrote a super article on 10/W Yorkshire, now published on the WFA website. Check it out http://www.westernfrontassociation.com/great-war-on-land/general-interest/1016-10th-west-yorks-wareham-1914-1915.html Someone here may know how to get hold of him as he may well have information directly relevant to your quest. Good luck and cheers, Simon
