corisande Posted 29 September , 2012 Share Posted 29 September , 2012 Having struggled for ages to find the MIC, I am not able to make out the ship that he served on. Seems to be a P&O ship but I don't have enough knowledge to get the name of it. He then goes on to the Inland Waterways Transport section of RE
Carmania Posted 29 September , 2012 Share Posted 29 September , 2012 Could be the Pera, but the last letter looks like an 'o' rather than an 'a'.
Carmania Posted 29 September , 2012 Share Posted 29 September , 2012 Look for John Wilmott Bennett Aled
corisande Posted 29 September , 2012 Author Share Posted 29 September , 2012 Thanks Aled That seems to fit the bill, and it was a WW1 transport. Bennett was off to Inland Water Transport in late 1916, so avoid the later torpedoing of that ship in 1917. Apart from your post on Google (3 minutes to index it) I get nothing for that ! corisande Posted 29 September , 2012 Author Share Posted 29 September , 2012 Thanks IPT. My state of play with him is - click here - a man with a name like John Bennett is always difficult to track, and as a mariner he misses many censuses
Carmania Posted 29 September , 2012 Share Posted 29 September , 2012 There's a photo of him on his CR10 in the Merchant Navy records on Findmypast. Aled
corisande Posted 29 September , 2012 Author Share Posted 29 September , 2012 Aled Thanks - you are a kind, patient man I should get better at these MMR men. The Auxiliaries in Mar 1921 started a company to "police" shipping so there are probably up to 100 of them taken on.
