Photographed in Macclesfield Cemetery, a lone grave of a young Belgian soldier:

H. THOREMANS

born 23/08/1892

died 11/09/1918

Has anyone got any ideas as to why he would have ended up in England?

As seany has mentioned, most likely transferred back to England on a hospital ship due to injury (possibly disease). Quite common to see Belgium headstones in British military cemeteries, Netley in Hampshire being one that Ive visited, and no doubt plenty at Brookwood. I would imagine that as you are close to Liverpool, there must of been a military hospital in the area? Raises a question though, how do you go about finding details for these men?

Patrick deWolf at ABL1914@pandora.be has an inventory of all Belgian war dead and is trying to check it. He would love to have these details.

He was in the Karabinier Wielrijders and is in the Belgian inventory as being buried in Macclesfield.

I started a threadin "soldiers" called Belgian War graves with 2 images of graves in Chelmsford, Essex.

Don't know how to link the thread here but searching the title should find it.

The Headstones in Chelmsford etc are the same as those in Longuenesse, and in Belgium.

So why is this lonely Belgian grave in a completely different form of headstone?

  • 9 years later...

There are a number of Belgian soldiers buried in Birtley Tyne /wear as there was a large colony of Belgian's there from 1915 to 18,I remember the

original ornate headstones way back now replaced with official CWGC ones
