Pavster1980 Posted 23 September , 2012 Share Posted 23 September , 2012 Hello again to you all I visited my dad yesterday and he handed me a box he found in the garage that contained old letters and paper work from past family members and in it wasa letter my great grandfather Private 40831 Arthur Phillips sent to his wife Maud in 1916. I am wondering if any of the knowledgeable member can tell me what the writting on the top right of the first page and also the bottom right of the second page means. If I am reading it right it says no. 42102 no.31 L.B.D. 10th Bn Northuberland Fussiliers a.p.o. sec.17 B.E.F. France Am I correct in believeing the number 42102 is that of the chap incharge of checking the letter and that he was with the 10th Battalion Northumberland Fussiliers? Army Post Office Section 17? Were these part of the Royal Engineers? Many thanks in advance Rich Page 2 Rich and finally the envelope Rich
Sandie Hayes Posted 23 September , 2012 Share Posted 23 September , 2012 I think you have most of it correct but I think LBD should read IBD. IBD = Infantry Base Depot. 31 IBD was at Etaples, France. LLT will explain everything http://www.1914-1918...basedepots.html Sandie

Pavster1980 Posted 24 September , 2012 Author Share Posted 24 September , 2012 Yes Sandie Arthur was my great grandfather, luckily for me he had one son Alan (mentioned in the letter) before he died. I believe Arthur contracted meningitis whilst being treted for trench foot and was sent home where he died. I had been told Arthur was only in France a couple of weeks, but I am still looking into it. Rich
