Photos of Officers kia

Dear All,

I'm finding it a little tricky to navigate my way round posts on this Forum, and havn't had much time recently to explore. (I don't even think I've had any replies to my request for photos of officers who served with the Jodhpur Lancers). However, I do now know that three were killed on active service and I wondered if any members might be able to find for me, or point me to an online database of obituaries with photos of officers killed (Great War Illustrated and the like). The officers are:

Lt-Col/ Major Eustace Lockhart Maxwell 14th Bengal lancers (Murray's Jats) and of The Grange, Guildford who died in France 20th July 1916 (which was a surprise to me because I believed he was the one who wrote ‘ A History of the XI King Edward’s Own Lancers (Probyn’s Horse) Published by AC Curtis Ltd., Guildford1941

Maj Robert George Anthony Trail, Corps of Guides Cavalry and of 7 St James' Place, Middx kia at Eppey, Nr Cambrai 1st Dec 1917(Medals and memorial in the National Army Museum)

Captain Frederick Owen Maynard, RAVC and of Romsey, Hants who “At the close of hostilities he volunteered for a further twelve months and was journeying to Kantara prior to his departure for England, when he was stricken with pneumonia and pleurisy, and passed away at the 24th Stationary Hospital, Kantara, on Jan.12th, 1920” Source: Obituary in The Veterinary Record February 7, 1920

For those of you that never saw my earlier post back in August, I'm trying to find photos of the 21 British Special Service Officers that at one time served with Jodhpur State Forces for a new Unit History that is being written in India. Apart from the above, I am struggling to make progress with finding photos of:

Lt Cyril Drummond LeGros Clark, 34th Cavalry who was later Chief Secretary of the Sarawak Government and was Interred by the Japanese in Batu Lintang prison of war camp in Borneo where he was Camp Master and was then murdered by the Japanese 6th July 1945

Lt Col Guy Rutherford Presscott Wheatley, 27th Light Cavalry (1897-1921) and 16th Light Cavalry (1921-1924) and of Hope Flintshire

2nd Lt Philip William John Crosland, 15th Punjab Infantry (1939-1946) and may still be alive (born Guildford 1917)

Lt Col Harry Buston Rogers, 5th Mahratta Light Infantry (1939-1944) (born Lincoln 1893)

and

Lt Col Cecil Alan Swinton Melville 5/6th Rajputana Rifles (1926-1949) and KRRC (1949-1956)

Any help will be very much appreciated. (I have scoured the National Army Museum, British library, Ancestry.com, Genes Re-united and Find My Past)

Jon, have you tried on-line, there are a few wartime memories (type) projects, that might be of use? You may need to 'bump up' a thread every now and then on the forum, just to keep it fresh. Some times your requests can get lost on a busy day, but I can assure you that if someone can help on here, they will (I can testify to that on numerous occasions). Good luck.

Sean.

Sorry about posting twice. I posted in a general Forum and then found that further down the page there was a section specific to photos

I had checked the regimental museums - though many are Indian Army (I must have leafed through every Indian Cavalry album in the National Army Museum in a two day stint with my girlfriend tracing their careers through the Indian Army Lists to follow them as they changed regiments.) Have probably put 300 hours and atleast a thousand pounds into this so far. But I've found about a dozen so far and have made contacts with the families of another four. (Although some families are not replying - which is a shame.)

Thanks so much for telling me about De Ruvigny's Roll - which is just what I was after. Unfortunately, the searches didn't come up with the right guys.

Probate records on Ancestry have been brilliant and led to me posting appeals in Parish Magazines in Flintshire etc!!

Yup,local papers and school Roll's of Honour are next - though none of the above were at their Public Schools in the 1911 Census which makes it trickier.

I assure you, I am really working hard at this but don't have the knowledge of First War stuff that you guys have. So thought I'd ask for your advice - which is much appreciated. (I'm not getting anything for this - just helping this guy in India out)

Thanks so much for your advice. I am REALLY grateful

Jon

And Tharkin, I do have photos of Capt Edward Malcolm Hughes, 14th Bengal Lancers who died 11th Sept 1916 in Basra (though don't know what from). Also of 2nd Lt Kunwar Daji Raj, 27th Light Cav, kia 23/09/1917 nr Vadencourt (and the subject of a small discussion on here between Matthew B, Cee Bee and Stephen Nutty - which led me to his photo in the Imperial Cadet Corps in 1911.). My friend in India already had one of Colonel Hyla Holden kia 26 Oct 1918 Aleppo so I havn't seen it.
