hi i am researching my great grandads army record and i have found some of his records but dont understand some of it .his name was charles leonard longman his service number i believe to be 38543,where it asks if he ever served in the army, navy and the like he answers yes and says 1st dragoon guards 50 days dis(which i think is discharged) 27-9-06 then comes the unreadable word it looks like purchased??? could he have bought his way out of the army? any ideas thanks .

If the "dis" and the "purchased" are together on the same line then it would be "Discharge Purchased" which means that you're right - the soldier bought his way out.

Find my past has four pages of his service record from the 1st Dragoon Guards. Charles's discharge cost him the sum of £10 having bought himself out within 30 days of his enlistment.
