English Leaseway Notes

My Grandfather served with the North Russian Expeditionary Force in 1918 - 1919 with the 81st Brigade Machine Gun Company. In the war diary the following extract mentions English Leaseway Notes. Does any member know what these were?

War Diaries 81st Brigade Machine Gun Company

31.12.1918

BATOUM

Disembarked at 1200 hours and marched to the Russian Barracks where Coy was quartered. The officers were quartered in the Wireless Station. All ranks warned not to accept English Leaseway Notes from the inhabitants, as they were Turkish forgeries.

I am guessing some kind of currency note but would like to to know more if possible.

Thanks

Clare
