seaJane Posted 19 July , 2012 Share Posted 19 July , 2012 Gwyn, I'm sure someone must have, but I don't know where the relevant citations index might be online. In my day (1980-1983) there was a David Jones expert at Jesus College Oxford, but I can't remember his name... Have you read 'The Sleeping Lord'? It'd be very relevant to your question. seaJane Posted 21 July , 2012 Share Posted 21 July , 2012 Simon - slightly cock-eyed photo of the aforementioned engraving. Also, apologies for the pink tinge. Something to do with the colour balance...
Simon_Fielding Posted 29 July , 2012 Author Share Posted 29 July , 2012 Lovely - a treasure - what's the latin?
seaJane Posted 30 July , 2012 Share Posted 30 July , 2012 Psalm 68 verse 16 in the Vulgate (Jones being Catholic). In the Authorised Version it's Psalm 69 verse 15: "Let not the water flood overflow me, neither let the deep swallow me up."
Simon_Fielding Posted 30 July , 2012 Author Share Posted 30 July , 2012 Highly appropriate - Thanks - my 'Classics' is of the Penguin variety....
seaJane Posted 30 July , 2012 Share Posted 30 July , 2012 By the way it's a lot smaller than it looks in the image - about quarter the size. It was designed as a tailpiece for the poem, but in the end DJ used this instead: http://ancientmariner.info/Illustrators/picture%20folders/David%20Jones/images/10.HTM - the Latin means "May the Lord light in us the fire of his love and the flame of eternal charity". Dragon Posted 30 July , 2012 Share Posted 30 July , 2012 Your engraving is beautiful, Jane. And so is the one he finally chose. Lovely lovely script, both. Gwyn
