mick1234 Posted 8 June , 2012 Share Posted 8 June , 2012 The Cavalry Club (Ireland) have just returned from a Battlefield trip to France and Flanders and would like to take this oppertunity to sincerely thank Mr Hedley Malloch on what was on sheer luck that we met in the village of Iron at the "Iron 12 Memorial" last weekend. Hedley gave us a great account of the 5 Munsters, 5 Connaught Rangers, 1 15th hussar, and the civilian Philip Chalandre who were executed in guise in 1915. All of our group felt that the memorial at Iron was a fitting finish to our first days touring, starting at Mons and working south along the retreat route through Le Cateau, Landrecies, and Etreux. We strongly recommend anyone visiting sites near here call into Iron and see this memorial for themselves . Another highlight of our visit was that we also got to meet the Lord Mayor of Iron which made us feel very important indeed. Again Thanks to Hedley and a splendid job done in being the person who organised the erection of this Memorial. Rgds Mick

Hedley Malloch Posted 14 June , 2012 Share Posted 14 June , 2012 Mick, It was good to meet you and your party. As you say, it was pure chance. I was in Guise on an unrelated matter and just called in on the way home. M. Gruselle (4th from the left in your photo) is the great-grandson of Leonie Logez, one of the ladies who looked after the soldiers in her mill.
