River97 Posted 28 April , 2012 Share Posted 28 April , 2012 To tell the full story: - Last weekend I visited Payneham Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia, in search of a possible non-com for the In From the Cold Project. It appears as though there is no on line register of grave references, therefore, I had to walk the isles. Now, this small cemetery measures roughly five football fields, side by side (250m x100m). It is not large at all, and this possible non-com was found with little hassle (photo's below). What became apparent, very quickly, was the amount of families, parents especially, who had lost sons in the Great War. I walked most rows last weekend and came to the conclusion that there would be a memorial inscription to a lost son, on average, every 15 headstones. Some are even side-by-side. That is an enormous price for any community. Today I went back, and this time to take photo's of these inscriptions. I have only taken photos from half of the cemetery and to explain which half, you could open the link below and follow along. Google Maps Payneham Cemetery I have taken photos from the northern half of the cemetery only. It may look the larger half, but is far from it. Over the preceding years, most of the northern half has been reclaimed as leases have expired. All that is left of the original plots are nine rows on the left (west) and two rows on the right(east). Over the following posts I have included a photo of the inscription, their CWGC details and a link to the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour. There would be Service Records available from the Australian National Archives also but these are not included. The following does not include any of the 15 CWGC burials or separate Second World War inscriptions (there are a few). What would be nice is if any of you out there had photos of their final resting place, either headstone or memorial panel. Enjoy, cheers Andy. River97 Posted 29 April , 2012 Author Share Posted 29 April , 2012 Due to a spare couple of hours coming up this morning, I ventured back to Payneham Cemetery and walked the rows of the southern part of the cemetery. After all the hoopla about there being so many, well, there is, just not as many as I thought. I have 36 photo's of inscriptions with some interesting fallen soldiers: There are six sets of brothers, A soldier who died at Fromelles and is one of the lucky few to be identified by name in the new Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery, A battalion CO who died on Gallipoli, and At least one who died at the landing on Gallipoli. I will endeavour to add their details latter. Cheers Andy.

roel22 Posted 29 April , 2012 Share Posted 29 April , 2012 Wow, what a fabulous project Andy. Good to see you've managed to digitally preserve so many headstones. Sad to realize many others must have already dissapeared. Roel
River97 Posted 29 April , 2012 Author Share Posted 29 April , 2012 Hi Roel, thanks for the comment. There are a few more photo's to come, including some more brothers. What I never mentioned in the original post was that the headstones from 2nd Lt George Watts to Lt William Colliver have already been moved. These are now in special areas forming a sort of display. The headstones for Pte Frank Fisher and Pte Riccard Summers are about to be moved. It's sad in a way, but that's progress and I can't begrudge the cemetery for recycling the plots. I have no doubt that there are more in the cemetery (headstones toppled over) that I have missed and there would have been many more that have already been removed. Here are a couple more, cheers Andy. Hartley Edwin Ellis Rank: Private Service No: 6927 Date of Death: 09/01/1916 Age: 18 Regiment/Service: Australian Army Medical Corps, 8th Field Amb. WhiteStarLine Posted 29 April , 2012 Share Posted 29 April , 2012 Thanks Andy, post #11's Colliver was the Lewis Gun officer of the 43rd Battalion and the brother of the adjutant, who wrote a very well written and comprehensive history of the 43rd while waiting for repatriation. Payneham cemetery also contains the graves of the wife and daughter of Ray Sanders. Ray was a sapper in the 14th Field Company and I used to stop by and chat with him when he ran a small shop in Dulwich. I assume he is buried somewhere in West Terrace.
