jonathanb2701 Posted 22 April , 2012 Share Posted 22 April , 2012 I have just came across a picture of this badge, which i assume would be connected to, or in support of the Ulster Volunteers in 1914. Obviously one of many such groupings in cities across the mainland, in sympathy with Ulster loyalists at this time, but the first time i have seen a badge like this. jonathanb2701 Posted 22 April , 2012 Author Share Posted 22 April , 2012 This badge is 31mm in diameter, with a pin back fitting. Name of maker on back of badge is Vaughtons Ltd Birm. This would appear to be a buttonhole badge.
quincey Posted 22 April , 2012 Share Posted 22 April , 2012 Ive never come across this before. A quick scan of the COvenant online shows 521 male Covenant signatorys. Even accounting for those of extreme age and those imply not interested, you would imagine there are a few hundred willing 'Ulster Volunteers' within that. Have never came across any UVF references for Edinburugh i have to say
jonathanb2701 Posted 27 April , 2012 Author Share Posted 27 April , 2012 It maybe possible that this is a recruiting badge which was given to men, from the Edinburgh district who enlisted with the service battalions who made up the 36th Ulster Division, to show where they came from. jonathanb2701 Posted 1 May , 2012 Author Share Posted 1 May , 2012 Thanks Tommy, thats a very interesting list of names, spread across several battalions. I have tried the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, advanced search using two key words Inniskilling and Edinburgh, but it just seemed to bring up Inniskillings from every city/town/village. It would also be good to know from the 1901 & 1911 census, how many of the men in your list were born in Ulster or indeed if their parents were born here, which may explain why some of them joined the Regiments they did.
