KOBE Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 Hi all, Does anybody have a link or can cite a source where it specifically states when the Kaiser was officially stripped of his British military ranks? I can find plenty about him being Degraded as a Knight of the Garter, but nothing more specific than that. I did manage to find the moment when his name was removed from the Army List though - in between August and October 1914... August 1914, present - https://digital.nls.uk/british-military-lists/archive/103627982 October 1914, absent - https://digital.nls.uk/british-military-lists/archive/103411047
Admin DavidOwen Posted 22 May , 2020 Admin Share Posted 22 May , 2020 The Hansard Archives has a snippet. https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200910/cmhansrd/cm100310/text/100310w0019.htm The modern Forfeiture Committee reserves the right not to publish their decisions in the Gazette but I am unsure if that would apply back in the days of ww1 (nothing in the Gazette of course). AOK4 Posted 22 May , 2020 Share Posted 22 May , 2020 Two things: Wilhelm was "German Emperor", not "Emperor of Germany". This was partly because of the formal reminder towards the "Holy German Empire". It also shows the ambiguity towards the smaller German unification (without German-speaking Austria) compared to the greater German unification (all German nations), which is clear in the name the Nazis used (Grossdeutschland or Grossdeutsches Reich) after annexing Austria as all German speaking nations were united. The stripping of foreign rulers from German ranks was also something which was done in Germany during the war. If I remember correctly, certain regiments stopped using foreign ruler's monograms on the shoulder boards at some point during the war. I am sure some other members will know more about this.
