On this day

“Endurance” sails from London with The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition on board. Before leaving Ernest Shackleton offered to put his ship and men at the service of the British government. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr Winston Churchill, thanked him for the offer but instructed the expedition to proceed.

Rumours of the 1/5 South Lancs' departure from St Helens continue to circulate around the town. The men are allowed out of barracks (incldung the various public buildings in which the bulk of the battalion are billeted) on Saturday evening. Those who live close to the town centre rush to visit family and friends. Some who live further away manage to borrow bicycles and 'career madly' across the town to snatch what could be a last visit before entraining. [Reporter 11/8]
