bill24chev Posted 2 April , 2012 Share Posted 2 April , 2012 The parents seem to be different! Could there have been two men from same place/extended family with same name.(This occurs in my family and causes confusion. The CWGC could also have ben confused recording only one death. nswarchitects Posted 2 April , 2012 Author Share Posted 2 April , 2012 Almost certainly the Tehran man was from Shirley Warwickshire not the one in question who was born in Shirley Derbyshire but thanks for looking SteveJ.
chrisharley9 Posted 2 April , 2012 Share Posted 2 April , 2012 Just checked GRO overseas & the only entry for 1918 is the lad buried at Tehran Cheers Chris
nswarchitects Posted 3 April , 2012 Author Share Posted 3 April , 2012 I have now found that his name also appears on the Shirley parish WW1 war memorial inside St Michael's Church so I am even more convinced that he a man who is not recorded by the CWGC. grantowi Posted 3 April , 2012 Share Posted 3 April , 2012 There is a C E Green listed as having died at sea, April 1918. He's not listed as a passenger, could be a Merchent Navy On the Gravestone, could they have used "Flanders Fields" as in the poem, maybe not as an actual location ? Guest Mike Green Posted 4 February , 2014 Share Posted 4 February , 2014 The above Charles Ernest Green who is buried in Tehran is my great uncle. He grew up in Britannia Road in Southampton. Here's a newspaper article with his and his brother's (my grandad's) picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/46493700@N04/12309137034/
Guest RMGreen Posted 6 June , 2014 Share Posted 6 June , 2014 Charles Ernest Green who is commemorated on his parents gravestone in Shirley churchyard is my husbands great uncle. I have been researching the family and discovered that Charlie went to Canada on 17th January 1913. He travelled and worked as a farm labourer in both Canada and America and on 5th June 1917 was on the Draft Register at Lake Villa, Illinois. I am still doing some research about him and would love to find his war record. I know that he was a Private First Class in the 108th Ammunition Train, 33rd Division and unfortunately died on 2nd October 1918 aged 23. He is buried in the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery, Romagne, France. If anyone can help me with this research I would be very interested and grateful. MartinWills Posted 6 June , 2014 Share Posted 6 June , 2014 Ah, how obvious when you think about it - US Army and therefore not on CWGC because it's not a commonwealth war grave .....
Peter Bennett Posted 7 June , 2014 Share Posted 7 June , 2014 Well found everyone ! There is a possibility I will be near to the cemetery in late September if anyone would like a photo of his grave.
River97 Posted 7 June , 2014 Share Posted 7 June , 2014 I remember when this thread began a couple of years ago. What a great ending. Peter, why not put a photo on this thread. Cheers Andy.
River97 Posted 7 June , 2014 Share Posted 7 June , 2014 And just found this: The National Personnel Records Centre (NPRC) in St. Louis maintains World War 1 official military personnel files. There is a down side to this though. On July 12, 1973, a fire ripped through the archive. Approximately 16-18 million military personnel files were destroyed. There were no duplicate files and they were never put onto microfilm. This equates to roughly 80% of service records lost from 1912 to 1960. It's a shame, but you never know. If you don't ask you don't get. Cheers Andy.
Guest RMGreen Posted 7 June , 2014 Share Posted 7 June , 2014 That was my next step to see if his records had survived the fire. It would be great if they have but unlikely. His family never spoke about him and there are no relatives who remember him now. It would just be good to add more to his story.
Peter Bennett Posted 7 June , 2014 Share Posted 7 June , 2014 Can't promise for definite, but I am going to Verdun and this cemetery is about 20-odd miles away. I will do my best, as these stories appeal to me. I will definitely post a photo on this thread if I get there.
Phil Wood Posted 8 June , 2014 Share Posted 8 June , 2014 Almost certainly the Tehran man was from Shirley Warwickshire not the one in question who was born in Shirley Derbyshire but thanks for looking SteveJ. When I first read his CWGC entry my thoughts went immediately to Shirley, Hampshire (matching the regiment). Never knew there were so many Shirleys!
