'Mackindergarten'

I am trying to find out more about the administrative staff training course run at the LSE in the prewar period, set up by Haldane and Mackinder, has anyone one on the forum looked into this aspect of preparation at all?

The six month course (usually run from October to March, although the first ran January to July 1907) was designed to create an administrative staff well versed in the necessary skills for running the 'business' of the army, and focussed on subjects such as accountancy, railway operation, economics, commercial law and statistics. However, there do not seem to be many references to it in the works I have come across. Spiers refers to the course in his book on Haldane's reforms, whilst one or two books on Mackinder have mentions of it. To my knowledge Brown's work on British Logistics does not mention the existence of the course at all, but rather focuses on a paucity of administrative training at Camberley. There were eight courses run between 1907 and 1914 with the last class prior to the outbreak of war graduating in March 1914.

If anyone has looked into the arrangements surrounding the LSE courses I'd be interested to hear more, particularly upon the destinations of those officers who passed the course upon the outbreak of war. Many officers who took the course were from the ASC, Ordnance Dept and the RE, but there were also representatives of the Guards, Infantry divisions and the RFA among others, it would be interesting to know if these officers were tasked to specific administrative duties throughout the conflict, and whether their attendance at the course led to them taking a particular career path during the war. As you will see below, the numbers that took the course were relatively small considering the size to which the BEF would grow, however it would be interesting to see if the course was seen as a valuable qualification.

Below are the names of all 243 officers who successfully passed the course prior to the outbreak of war (alphabetical order). If anyone would prefer this info in a spreadsheet for their own manipulation, please let me know.

I don't know if CPhillips is still active on the Forum but I happened upon this 2012 post and found it fascinating. I have, since last year, been in the possession of  the group to one of the chaps mentioned - Lt. Colonel Arnold Herklots, D.S.O.

I wonder if there are any course photographs of these men in existence? Would dearly like to see what my chap looked like.

Regards

Rory

Thanks all for the interesting information. Sadly it's come a little too late for inclusion in either the thesis or book that I have been working on, but both do include further details on the course.

Sadly, I don't know of any photographs of the course, or of those who completed it. There are few references to it in the contemporary literature, the most complete being a review in the Royal Engineers Journal in 1907 after the first cohort had passed through.

Sorry this is too late for research, just seen your post when looking for material on my grandfather Major Arthur Victor Langton RGA.  After the course he did not have a distinguished career!  Attached to Canadian and American armies for a couple of years.  Was in Fort Carlisle, Queenstown, Co Cork with 43 Coy RGA (coastal guns) 1913-1916, then Siege Artillery (prob instructor but I haven’t nailed this yet) in Lydd, Kent 1916 - 1918.  No sign of any staff or War Office job that you would expect after a course of this kind, and no sign of any wartime active service, which for a gunner is extraordinary.  Apart from the North American years, his career before and after the course was in a series of coastal gun batteries around the Empire. Left the army immediately after the end of the war and became a civil servant in various Empire locations.  I am nevertheless very grateful to you for this vignette of his service as his service record is very thin.  He died when I was 5 and I have few memories of him and very little material on his career.
