Leigh Mc Posted 7 March , 2012 Author Share Posted 7 March , 2012 At the conclusion of the war Peace Bonds were promoted in the same way as the War Loan Bonds had been during the war. Peace Bonds were instigated to raise funds for the repatriation, resettlement and building of building homes for returned servicemen. Three Peace Loans were staged. It is my understanding that there was one campaign each in 1919, 1920 and 1921.

Leigh Mc Posted 7 March , 2012 Author Share Posted 7 March , 2012 The following photograph is from what I believe was the second peace loan in 1920. Its shows Prime Minister Billy Hughes delivering a speech at the ‘Temple of Peace’. The occasion was the Prime Minister’s first visit to Sydney in well over a year, as he had been in England and at the Versailles Peace Conference. Hughes is seen explaining the use of Peace Bonds and their importance to the country's Ex-servicemen.
Leigh Mc Posted 7 March , 2012 Author Share Posted 7 March , 2012 The official launch of the 'Diggers Loan' which took place outside the Commonwealth Bank Sydney at noon on 8 August 1921. This was the third and last peace loan to be staged. As well as the State Governor and Lord Mayor, the soprano Dame Nellie Melba was also present. She can be seen here just after cutting the ribbon which released streamers, bunting and balloons into the street as well as a flight of pigeons that carried messages that advised the public to purchase Peace Bonds.
