I can only add the following from his entry in "Recipients of the DCM, 1914-20" (R.W.Walker):

A/326 L/Sgt Longley, R. LG 20 October 1916

A check of the LG for that date reveals:

A/326 L/Sjt. R. Longley, KRRC

"For conspicuous gallantry in action. When his platoon serjeant was wounded in the advance, he, though only a lance-corporal at the time, took command, captured the enemy's position, and consolidated it under machine gun and rifle fire."

Hope the above helps

Ed

Thanks , Ed. I think this info. suggests the award must have been for an action near Delville Wood on 15.09.16 when this soldier was killed.
