Bob Coulson Posted 30 July , 2004 Share Posted 30 July , 2004 On the database the entry for 2nd Lt Algernon Geoffrey ( Rokesby ) Shorthouse is listed with his third christian name in brackets as I have typed it here. Have not seen this before, is there any significance to the brackets round the name? Bob.
Tom Morgan Posted 30 July , 2004 Share Posted 30 July , 2004 Bob - if it's of any significance, "Officers Died in the Great War" makes no mention of the "Rokesby" part of this officer's name. Tom
gord97138 Posted 30 July , 2004 Share Posted 30 July , 2004 Bob: I checked the census for 1891 and found this-also no listing of the name "Rokesby" included! gordon Name Age in 1891 Birthplace Relationship to head-of-house Civil parish County Shorthouse, Algernon Geoffrey 1 Old kent road, London Son Croydon Surrey
Terry Denham Posted 30 July , 2004 Share Posted 30 July , 2004 Bob The inclusion of a name in brackets usually indicates a nickname - eg 'Sonny' etc. This info was supplied by nok on the Final Verification Form. It is not very common but it does occur. In this case, 'Rokesby' does not sound like a nickname but is possibly a family name which the nok wanted to be recorded. Only research in to the family history is likely to give a definitive answer. Still, it could just be an unusual nickname.
gord97138 Posted 30 July , 2004 Share Posted 30 July , 2004 Bob: I also did a search on marriages of his parents and found this: (Father)William Stanley Neville Shorthouse (Mother)Annie Dennis Married 1883 -London Surrey. Can't seem to find the "Rokesby" name. Name may very well be connected to the family somewhere as Terry pointed out! gordon
Bob Coulson Posted 31 July , 2004 Author Share Posted 31 July , 2004 Tom, Gordon, Terry, Thanks for the input, the nickname info is interesting also a family connection with the name of Rokesby is possible. Will have to look into this further. Terry, you wouldn't by chance have the register entry for Cambridge City Cemetery would you? Many thanks Bob.
