lukerwhite Posted 5 January , 2012 Posted 5 January , 2012 I would desperately love to know more about my great grandfathers WW1 experience. I only have these two photos with him in uniform. I can tell he was in the RGA and that is it. Can any experts out there tell me anymore from the pictures. Rank, Regiment? He was born 2 Apr 1882 in Willesden, Middlesex and was a plumber. He would have been 34 when war broke out. I havent been able to locate any records for him on Ancestry. I would love to know if he served abroad.
sotonmate Posted 5 January , 2012 Posted 5 January , 2012 Luke You should be able to find his Medal Index Card on Ancestry UK if he served overseas. Given that his surname is common his first three names won't be, in that sequence, and then being RGA will make it quite a short list (hopefully of one !).Suggest you start your search with William EW White, Royal Garrison Artillery. Good hunting ! Sotonmate

sotonmate Posted 5 January , 2012 Posted 5 January , 2012 Luke So it simply might be that he didn't go overseas. Are there any William White RGA at all ? If so have you opened up each one to see what is fully on the card ? Sotonmate
Seany Posted 5 January , 2012 Posted 5 January , 2012 Is the guy marked with X on the second photo really the same man?
battiscombe Posted 5 January , 2012 Posted 5 January , 2012 It seems quite possible he was one of these ?? - with medal cards suggesting overseas post 1916- Victory medal & War Medal entitlements mean they served in a theatre of war i believe. Someone may be able to suggest what the RGA numbers suggest as an enlistment date .. but none seem to have surviving records as far as I can see William E White Royal Field Artillery, Royal Garrison Artillery 113217, 201846 William E White Royal Garrison Artillery 101451 William E White Royal Garrison Artillery 147365 William E White Royal Garrison Artillery 169098
