Hi,

I recently acquired a grouping, (alledgedly) belonged to Lieutenant J.A.S. Burges, RAMC. He studied medecine at St.Mungo's around 1910, through the CWGC site I found out the follwing:

BURGES, JAMES ALEXANDER STEWART

Initials: J A S

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Lieutenant

Regiment/Service: Royal Army Medical Corps

Unit Text: 49th Field Amb.

Age: 45

Date of Death: 23/04/1917

Additional information: Son of James Burges, of Ballindalloch, Banffshire; husband of Mabel Annie Radcliffe Burges, of Belmont House, West Bay, Dunoon, Argyllshire.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: VI. C. 4.

Cemetery: AUBIGNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION

I would like to know more about him, checked the NA but the diaries of the 49th Field Ambulance are not available on line...Any info is welcome!

His Medal Index Card states he went to France on 28.08.1916.

His medals were sent to his widow, Mrs JAS Burges of Belmont House, West Bay, Dunoon.



Born on 22nd April 1872 (Demerara, Guyana), he studied at the University of Glasgow and gained a Bachelor of Medicine Degree in 1901

Hi Rene,

J.A.S.Burges attended Glasgow University where he is included on their Roll of Honour, unfortunately there is no photo of him and very few details. He attained the degree of MB in 1901.

PS He would have been awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal, these should have the details: Lieut.J.A.S..BURGES, impressed upon their rims.
