shutt Posted 1 January , 2012 Posted 1 January , 2012 I have for some time been trying to discover the unit my Great Uncle served with, but seem to have hit a brick wall. All I know from his medal card is that he was Bombardier Christopher H Shuttleworth 104655 and received the Victory and British medals. I believe a couple of years back, a forum member kindly looked at the medal rolls, but no unit details were given. I don`t even know when he joined up, only that he lived in Leeds and was an insurance agent for the Royal London, survived the war and had a succesful career with that company, eventually becoming the MD I believe. I would be really interested to know which unit he was with, where he served etc, probably won`t be able to with so little to go on, but if anyone can help in any way I would really appreciate it.

Hi Tom, I'm guessing from his service number (and it is just a guess!) that he was most probably mobilised mid-July 1916 (13th / 14th or thereabouts), possibly either at No. 4 Depot in Great Yarmouth or more likely No 1 Depot in Dover (Gunners 104692 and 104717 were certainly mobilised at Dover). I may be completely off the mark here, but certainly one or two other forum members I can think of would be able to correct me. All the best Steve
kevinrowlinson Posted 2 January , 2012 Posted 2 January , 2012 His number, as already given in a previous post, would indicate someone arriving at No. 4 Depot, Gt. Yarmouth, around the 20th July 1916. It is possible that, as already mentioned, he was sent to Tay and renumbered with a Nth. Scottish TF no., which he may not have kept after being posted to possibly 231st Siege Battery. His TF number may have been remembered at home; did you follow up the Leeds AVL connection? Could he have lived at Nowell Terrace, Leeds? Trying to confirm that he served with 231 Sge Bty would take a lot of research, without any guarantee that he actually served with that battery. One would also have to realise that most gunners served with more than one battery; one only has to look at a photo taken after the war of gunners who were original members to appreciate how many men must have left and never returned, but went on to serve with another battery. shutt Posted 2 January , 2012 Author Posted 2 January , 2012 Steve and Kevin, thanks very much for your help. I`d forgotten about the LAV, but remember looking at it a while ago. I think that the Christopher H Shuttleworth of Nowell Terrace must be my man, the different number puzzled me but he is down as RGA. The surname is`nt a common one really, plus I know he lived in Leeds at the time, he moved there in 1914 to work for the Royal London. Unfortunately all the older relatives who might have known his address for sure are dead now. So is the number on the AVL a Scottish TF number Kevin ?. I will have to try looking into the 231 Sge Bty connection, I know it won`t be easy and no guarantee, but its a start so I really appreciate your pointing me in some direction. Hopefully there may be some other Artillery experts on the forum that can help further. So thanks again guys, really appreciate your help on this. Tom
