Burial in Sydney

While trying to tie up a few loose ends regarding the men commemorated on a local memorial, I'm looking for some asistance with the following (because I don't know where to start!)

Isaiah Constable was a seaman on the SS Katoa (Dunedin) and reportedly died on August 15th, 1917, while the ship was docked at Sydney. He is listed in the G.R.O. Marine Deaths as aged 37 and a newspaper article states that he died at Sydney, but says nothing of his burial arrangements. He wouldn't be eligible for commemoration by the CWGC but I'd still like to be able to state where he is buried (if possible).

Does anyone have any ideas where I may look?

Cheers.

Andy.

Hi Andy, Depending on his nationality, (he may have been a new Zealander and returned for burial) you may also check with the Seaman's Mission or local maritime museums for any historical data. The port of registry may also be NZ and you may wish to contact the NZ National Archives

You need to search the National Library of Australia. I'm not quite sure how it works but it's something along the lines of our National Archives at Kew.

Have a look at the website, there's probably a 'search our records' page that may help. http://www.nla.gov.au

Good luck,

He is buried in Rookwood Independent Cemetery, Sydney

Section: Independent, Plot: B, Grave: 1819

Buried 18.08.17

You can go to the cemetery website and get a map of exactly where in the cemetery his grave is located.

This cemetery is a separate entity within the larger Rookwood Necropolis.

Australia is well served for online cemetery search facilities.
