DDP1955 Posted 28 December , 2011 Posted 28 December , 2011 Pals I am looking at SDGW on Ancestry and am well aware that I have to treat these records with a bit of caution In the comments section at the bottom it states ''Formerly 15493, R.C.R''. Could somebody tell me what R.C.R. is, if it helps at all, the man comes from Yorkshire and somehow ended up in the Scottish borderers ... Many thanks Dianne
Old Owl Posted 28 December , 2011 Posted 28 December , 2011 Hi Dianne, He must have emmigrated to Canada and enlisted with the RCR on the outbreak of war, as many men from the UK did at that time. He was obviously discharged by the Canadians or transferred to another unit prior to becoming a casualty. His records should be available via the Canadian Archives which should give you chapter and verse regarding his military career. Hope this helps, Robert PS If you could post his name and details then I am sure that more help will be forthcoming.
DDP1955 Posted 28 December , 2011 Author Posted 28 December , 2011 I did think of the Royal Canadian Regiment to start off with but discounted it on the basis that my chap was born in Yorkshire and his residence was Yorkshire, no known links to Canada that I am aware of!! His name was Frederick William Young and he died on 6th Jan1917. His M.I.C. does not mention the earlier regiment either
David_Underdown Posted 28 December , 2011 Posted 28 December , 2011 Could be Reserve Cavalry Regiment. If he had served with Canadian forces, his attestation papers should be on the Library and Archives Canada website - try searching just by number

DDP1955 Posted 28 December , 2011 Author Posted 28 December , 2011 Just as I was getting excited that there might be a Canadian connection on my memmorial Dashed again ..... I am just hoping that somebody will come along who may know what this regiment is because I doubt he would have joined the Kings Own Scottish borderers from Yorkshire ...

regimentalrogue Posted 28 December , 2011 Posted 28 December , 2011 Just to close the loop on the suggestion for The Royal Canadian Regiment, I have identified only three soldiers that served overseas during the War with (pre-29 Sep 1915) Permanent Force service numbers in the 15xxx range. These were: 15206 BEARDSALL (later CEF # 477053) 15064 SKELTON (served as WILSON, later CEF # 477898) 15020 WILSON (later CEF # 478012)

By the way I have a medal and service papers for a Canadian soldier in WW1, I'll look it out, to make sure you have his details ...
