Hello - the 30th Inf Bde Routine Orders for 3rd Sep 1915 (Gallipoli) mentions "..Barr & Stroud Rangefinders.." can anyone help me understand exactly what these were? Thanks. MG

Please forgive my second posting in respect of toy soldiers, I have nothing against them and still do not collect them however my brother gifted me with this just yesterday. I presume this figure (clearly WW1 uniform) is making use of one of the range finders under consideration? The figure base is marked Britains.

Hi MG

I have an original 1912 dated B&S range finder in collection, complete with it's wooded box and rarer than rare alliminium short tripod which is dated 1916.

I've attached a photo of the B&S standing in it's box. The box had a small brass leg which allowed the lid to stay up so the range finder could be zeroed in.

It could also be hand held by the two fold down handles.

I've just tried to up-load a photo of mine, but the site wouldn't allow it as the file was too big.

Please e-mail me and I'll be more than happy to send you the link

Here is a nice photograph of a Rangefinder in action, with good details of its mounting tripod.
