Does anyone know how many pages would be for WO 95/2080 the war diary for the 7th LNL? It isn't - as yet- an online document. I was going to send off to the National Archives but there is no indication of prices. I also have discovered from browsing through a lot of posts that they appear to have suspended copying for the moment.

The ACRE site quotes 10p per page but although they had the WO reference number again it didn't say how many pages.

Thank you

There is no way of telling unless someone visiting TNA looks at the file. Some War diaries were lost, or parts were lost. I have seen some a s little as one page and others that run on for many dozens of pages. In my experience when sending off for photocopies of War Diaries the answer comes back (in every case) 'not enough information, please be more specific' (or something to that effect). This happened even when requesting copies of single documents ( a map for example).

The TNA staff are extremely helpful on site, but requesting copies remotely is a different experience. If you are unable to get to TNA in person I would recommend you would put in a plea on the forum for any kind member visiting TNA have a look at the file, and then you will have an idea of how many pages.

The War Diary is likely to be part of a bundle with other battalions in the same Brigade within the same Division as the bundles were grouped by the Official Historians when writing the Official Histories. Often there is additional information such as correspondence between senior surviving Officers and the Official Historian for example. If the unit changed Brigade or Division (as many did) the complete Battalion War Diary might be split across different bundles. If you are looking for a specific period of the 7th LNL, this is something to consider. If you want the complete diary you may have to look at a number of files in different boxes.

The TNA now has a (fairly recent) facility whereby you can photograph the individual pages (using TNA overhaed cameras) which can be sent as a file to your email - but you have to do it in person. It is particularly helpful as the images are of course easily transportable and the image quality is generally pretty good. MG

As a reasonable working average, figure on six pages per month, but then bear in mind that some diaries have copious attachments of orders, maps, narratives etc. A complete diary for an infantry battalion usually runs to several hundred pages.

Looks like it could be cheaper working out the battles and limiting requests for them. Hadn't realised there could be maps and orders etc., thought it would just be diary pages.

Jean

I managed to delete the email address you gave for me to send you a copy of the history of the 7/LNL! Can you PM me with contact details so I can deliver as promised?

Thanks

Jonathan
