ss002d6252 Posted 26 December , 2011 Posted 26 December , 2011 For anyone who may be interested I have now started adding my 6th DLI records to my website - durhamlightinfantry.net - , its still a work in progress so its still basic and I have a few search related gremlins to iron out but it works. Any extra information for any records will always be appreciated as the records are basic but I'm always adding information.
grantowi Posted 27 December , 2011 Posted 27 December , 2011 Hi, Just been to see your site and noticed that there is no way for people to get in contact with you via it (if they come across it via google for example) Just a thought Grant
ss002d6252 Posted 27 December , 2011 Author Posted 27 December , 2011 Thanks - that's one feature I'll be adding shortly (spent so much time trying to get the database running that its slipped my mind). Any more suggestions would be appreciated.
Jim Strawbridge Posted 27 December , 2011 Posted 27 December , 2011 I have two known medals to the 6th D.L.I. 6-158 PTE. M. WHITE. (BWM) and 6-972 PTE. A.E. CLARKE (victory). It seems that I need to know the first names (initials or just the surname is not enough) to see what you have about them. I am hoping that the advance search facility will correct this (although I know that I could go into the MICs and get the first names if I was pressed).
ss002d6252 Posted 27 December , 2011 Author Posted 27 December , 2011 Thanks - criticisms and comments are equally received. The advanced search should allow wild-card searches but at the moment I have gremlins in the search so I may enable it with the caveat that its not 100%.
Ken Lees Posted 27 December , 2011 Posted 27 December , 2011 A website like this is quite a challenge in putting together, so well done for giving it a go. When I did mine initially, my objectives were different, so it is interesting to see your approach. You seem to be putting your research information into the public domain first and foremost, whereas I was using the web to draw in additional information. I wanted the website to be a hook from which I could gather more information from around the globe, and it has worked pretty well in that regard. You might be doing this in due course, but adding general information about the regiment, its battalions, overseas service, War Diaries, etc. is likely to generate interest and people will be contacting you to share what they have about their relatives, which you can then add to the site. Good luck with your project, I will watch the site's development with interest. Ken p.s. If I can pick your brains, how do you create the little icon that appears alongside the website title on the tab in a browser (as in the pic below)? I would like to add one to my site.
ss002d6252 Posted 27 December , 2011 Author Posted 27 December , 2011 The 'favicon' was generated using this site - http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/favicon/ - and the info to putting it on your site is at the bottom of the same page. I do want the site to be able to gather more info and I may have a look at your site for ideas
ss002d6252 Posted 27 December , 2011 Author Posted 27 December , 2011 I have enabled the advanced search but at the moment it can be broken so please go easy on it (and me)
Jim Strawbridge Posted 28 December , 2011 Posted 28 December , 2011 I have enabled the advanced search but at the moment it can be broken so please go easy on it (and me) It has worked for me.
Bardess Posted 29 December , 2011 Posted 29 December , 2011 May I suggest that you put a link to your website in your signature? [is it down ATM?]
ss002d6252 Posted 29 December , 2011 Author Posted 29 December , 2011 That's an idea, I hadn't thought about putting it in my signature. It may have been down temporarily as I've been uploading more data.
ss002d6252 Posted 6 January , 2012 Author Posted 6 January , 2012 After (many) hours trawling ancestry I have found, I believe, 575 of the men who originally went overseas as well as a large number of men who enlisted and were discharged prior to the battalion leaving England. There is also a large number of men listed who were part of later drafts.
ss002d6252 Posted 30 August , 2012 Author Posted 30 August , 2012 I've now added a blog to my site - http://durhamlightinfantry.wordpress.com/ - to which I'm (slowly) transcribing the war diary amongst other things. I've also added details from my diary reconstruction of April and May 1915.
