War Diary: 9th Worcestershires in Dunsterforce

Colleagues:

I need to consult the War Diary for the 9th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment for period July to Sept 1918, (when they were part of Dunsterforce).

I checked the listing of War Diaries which members have voluntarily provided, and didn't find it, so this is a bit of a "Hail Mary pass" (as they say in American football), to ascertain whether or not I've missed something obvious, or whether some one has a copy and hasn't (yet?) listed it.

My interest stems from my research into the career of Lieutenant Richard Harold FINDON, who served with the 9th during that period, being wounded in action during the Defence of Baku, on about 14 Sept 1918, (as part of Dunsterforce).

Cheers,

Glen,

PS: the PRO reference for the relevant file is:

WO 95/5159 - 9 Battalion Worcestershire Regiment - (1916 Feb. - 1918 Nov.)

Not sure if it's any use but the history tells the following tale:

".....For the ensuing 3 hours ( a little after 8.30am) 'B' Co kept the enemy at bay, repulsing all their attempts to pass and to encircle the position at Balajari. The company suffered heavy loss, and 3 out of its 4 officers were hit, but the position was firmly held"

A footnote lists the 3 Officers as: Capt A B Craig, 2/Lt R G Trusted and 2/Lt R H Findon, all wounded

Thanks very much Martin. Greatly appreciated, indeed. I am starting to think that there is very little more one will learn about the 9th Worcs in Dunsterforce from the actual War Diary -- ie., the official history is probably just a refinement of the Diary.

One question, however: would you be able to tell me whether or not there is anything of value (re: this query) on page 403 of the Official History? I ask, simply because I have been sent a scan of page 402 (with the heading "The Evacuation of Baku"), and it seems to end rather abruptly, begging the question: does the story continue on page 403?

Cheers,

Hi

Sorry i can't help with your request about page 403 of the OH. The information I sent came from Stacke's history of the Worcestershire Regiment. Being a Regimental history, it really only covers the main actions of each battalion but, having said that, Slacke gives quite detailed accounts

Okay. Too bad, but thanks very much, regardless.

Glen
