Remembered Today:

British Line Infantry at Gallipoli

Hello - Can anyone tell me if men from the 18 regiments listed below served at Gallipoli? I don't believe that these regiments were represented at Bn level (I may be wrong), but it is possible that ORs or Officers from these regiments were attached to other Regiments or served in staff appointments?. Any pointers would be gratefully received. Regards MG

I am trying to establish if men from every British (pre-war) line-infantry regiment served at Gallipoli. Having trawled Westlake and the Appendices of the Official History, most Regiments seem to have been represented at Bn level by either a Reguglar Bn, TF Bn or Service Bn (see full list below) with the 18 regiments also highlighted in red.

Hello Martin

I don't think the Black Watch served in Gallipoli, the only battalion of black watch I know around that area was the 2nd Battalion Black watch which was in Mesopotamia

This from the LLT

http://www.1914-1918.net/Gallipoli.htm

http://www.1914-1918.net/52div.htm

it doesn't included the Black Watch

As Mike said the 1st and 2nd Regiment of Scottish Horse became 13th Black Watch in Sept 1916

Thanks gents... I was really looking for men serving with the 18 Line Regiments up to and including Gallipli rather than Regiments that were later absorbed. There were a number of Yeomanry Regiments absorbed/transferred into Bns of Line Infantry Regiments. My error for not being specific enough - apologies.

I am really searching for men (probably Officers or SNCOs as they would be easier to track) from the 18 Regiments who may have served at Gallipoli - so,using the Black Watch as an example, did any Black Watch man serve at Gallipoli in a staff role or attached as a senior member of a TF Bn or Service Bn with another Regiment? The Bde Staffs and Div Staff were populated with men from a myriad of Regiments, and I am trying to establish if men from these 18 Regiments served there. Essentially trying to establish if every Line Infantry regiment was represented at Gallipoli in some way or other - my guess is that they probably did.

Regards MG

P.S. I am working on Line Cav and Yeomanry separately and will post separately - for example the 4th Hussars, 10th Hussars and 11th Hussars, Scots Greys, (among many other Cavalry Regiments) had Officers attached to Yeomanry Regiments at Gallipoli.

Hi Martin,

Well you seem to have set yourself quite a task here, not by the numbers involved but simply by the task of rooting them out!!

I have one officer for you: Lieut.L.T.L.Foster, 16th DLI att'd 1/5th Manchesters, Kia 7/8/15.

I will let you know if I find anymore.

Robert

Devonshire proving problematic. There must be one. Family dinner calls, so anyone feel free to find a Devonshire man, feel free.

Cheers Mike

Not sure if THIS man counts?

From HERE

" 14391 L/Cpl Charles Anthony Victor JEEVES, MM 7th battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers later 2nd Lt in The Devonshire Regiment attached 1/9th Bn, The Kings (Liverpool Regiment), 165th Brigade, 55th Division, B.E.F. Son of Anthony and May Jeeves of Albert Park Road joined a Chums company of the 7th Royal Dublin Fusiliers shortly after the outbreak of war and landed at Gallipoli on 9th August 1915. He transferred to the Salonika front in November, he was wounded, and in September 1916 was again wounded while trying to get a mortally wounded Major to safety. For his bravery on that occasion he was awarded the Military Medal. "

I can confirm that no units of the Royal Berkshire Regiment were involved although one or two officers who were members of the regiment but serving with other regiments may have been involved.

Mike. Many thanks for your terrific help in the pursuit of men from these battalions. I feel that someone will turn up who was a serving member of the Devonshire Regt at the time - sadly Jeeves does not count according to the definition of serving at the time - but thanks anyway for highlighting him....... It would be nice to be able to have the hard evidence to confirm that every British line infantry regiment was represented at Gallipoli by serving men. It is something that I have often wondered about and given the size and scale of the operation I have little doubt that the Devonshires would have had someone on the ground....I just need to keep searching. Thanks again. MG
