FYI: Stolen Sword Collection

A large collection of British military swords from the Victorian period through WWI was recently stolen. All are Wilkinsons and should be easy to spot based on the serial numbers. Here is a link to a complete list and other details:

An impressive collection--I can think of three which I would love to own. Lets hope that the t**d or t**ds that stole this collection are caught and dealt with before they have chance to damage or destroy the swords when they realise how traceable these are!!:angry2:

Nearly 120 swords? Thats a considerable mass of metal; the thieves obviously had ample time and transport. Wonder if these are stolen to order for the overseas collector market, or if it was just an opportunity crime?

Unfortunately there are such things as criminal gangs that specialise in art and antique thefts, one such operated in the general area in which I live, was rounded up a year or so back and are now studying Britain's antique prison system. They are only able to thrive because they have links to unscrupulous dealers who in turn have international contacts and a collection such as this can be shipped out and sold abroad.

It would seem that these swords were stolen in the USA. In UK, where ownership of edged weapons appears to be unacceptable, would such a collection be legal?

Nothing illegal about owning a sword in the UK (if you're of age). Carrying it around in public might be a different matter depending on the wheres, whys and when. But then I've got some pretty deadly weapons in my kitchen that many a trench raider might have been happy to carry. Probably better steel than army issue too.
