War13Memorial Posted 22 December , 2011 Posted 22 December , 2011 Is there an official definition of the term cadre strength, plenty mentions and dictionary mentions on line. Was there an actual number of men remaining in a unit reached when cadre strength kicked in ?. In A History of the Black Watch [Wauchope] Vol. 2 7th Bn he says on page 314 "Here the Colours were carred for the first time" January 1919 in Belgium Can't find this meaning, can someone help ?. thanks Billy

It would either have few officers and men that survived, or it was reduced to a few officers and men to retain the name. However, someone else might have different view, or would be able to verify this statement! Regards Arthur
dycer Posted 22 December , 2011 Posted 22 December , 2011 Billy, From the 8th Royal Scots War Diary and History Strength of Battalion on 30 November 1914-27 Officers 929 Other Ranks. Strength of Battalion on 31 March 1919- 11 Officers 89 Other Ranks. "On 14 March(1919),the cadre moved to Monage, and left there for home on 22 April. On Thursday 24 April the cadre took farewell of Dunkirk and France, and sailed for Southampton. After three days at Gailes, the cadre was welcomed home at Haddington on 30th April 1919." My suggestion for "carred" is "carried". George
