Lancashire Fusilier Posted 11 March , 2016 Author Share Posted 11 March , 2016 The following series of photographs are a gallery of ' wicker ' motorcycle sidecars, all amazing designs and constructions. it is sometimes hard to comprehend that they were attached to motorcycles, and people, both adults and children happily rode in them on the open roads, which by today's safety standards, would be unthinkable. This first photograph shows a WW1 era ' Wicker ' sidecar, the letter on the motorcycle's number plate is a little hard to read, were it a ' D ' it is an early Kent plate, if it is an ' O ' it is an early Birmingham plate. Lancashire Fusilier Posted 11 March , 2016 Author Share Posted 11 March , 2016 Here is a rather opulent De-luxe ' Wicker ' sidecar, with a wonderful array of front and rear lamps, a folding wind-shield, a spectacular horn system operated by the sidecar passenger, and there also appears to be a soft toy attached to the front of the sidecar. The ' LA ' number plate letters, are for an early London North West region registration. I think it is the front end of the Horn, the Horn's ' bulb ' is by the sidecar passenger's side, and is connected by an air tube. It is certainly unusual to have 2 Horns, one of the handle bars and one on the sidecar, and that is quite a large ' bulb ', so I assume both the Horns worked effectively. The ' LB ' number plate on the right, is an early London North West region registration, and that on the left, if it is ' LO ' it is again London North West, or if it i s ' JO ', it is an early Oxford registration. Of note, are the custom made weather-proof sidecar passenger leg coverings. The ' AL ' number plate letters are for an early Nottingham registration, with Nottingham being the location of the ' Campion ' motorcycle factory. The Royal Engineers' Serjeant, is wearing a ' grenade ' badge above his Serjeant's chevrons. This photograph was taken at RAF Duxford, and not only shows excellent details of the Phelon & Moore motorcycle, but also the RAF Despatch Rider's uniform including her helmet and goggles, mackintosh, leather gauntlet gloves and spats. The ' AW ' letters on the number plate, are for an early Shrewsbury/Shropshire registration. Lancashire Fusilier Posted 15 March , 2016 Author Share Posted 15 March , 2016 Here is an excellent 3/4 side view of the same Phelon & Moore 498 cc ' P & M ' RAF motorcycle sidecar combination, as seen in posts #4694/95, photographed at the same location. The WRAF Despatch Rider is wearing a stylish fur trimmed cap and greatcoat, and the nicely leather lined sidecar carries the ' R.A.F. ' marking on it's side. We also have a good view of the Acetylene Generators powering both the motorcycle's headlight, and the spotlight fitted to the sidecar. The ' LM ' letters on the number plate, are for an early London North West region registration.
