Simon Weston Posted 8 December , 2011 Share Posted 8 December , 2011 I am researching my great grandfather, 208086 Pte H J Weston of the Rifle Brigade formerly 38225 of the Somerset Light infantry I know he was a reservist, having served with the SLI in the Boer War. I know he was sunk on the SS Ivernia on 1st Jan 1917 off Cape Matapan. I believe he was probably a member of 19th battalion RB, but I can not confirm this, and can find little detail about this unit. The TNA catalogue suggests they were line of communication troops in Eygpt. Does this mean they didn't belong to a Brigade? Can anybody shed light on this please? Jim_Grundy Posted 8 December , 2011 Share Posted 8 December , 2011 The 19th (Western) Battalion Rifle Brigade was formed as a unit of the Territorial Force on 28th November 1915 from Supernumerary Territorial Force companies. These companies had been formed under Army Order 187 of May 1915 from National Reservists who were employed on guarding vulnerable points. It served as a 'Garrison Battalion' from January 1916 in Egypt and, later, Palestine. Source: Brigadier E.A. James' "British Regiments 1914-1918".
