Armyaviation Posted 1 December , 2011 Share Posted 1 December , 2011 We are researching a family member and have come to a brick wall, we would like any more information on him if people can help! he is Frederick Arthur Lee , born in huddersfield and possibly joined the Duke of Wellingtons Regiment in the first world war as a private. He was then commissioned into the Indian reserve of officers (1918) and subsequently served in Nowshera, India. The questions I have is which actual DWR battalion did he serve and where in france, and also the information I have on india is very limited. Apparently he served with the Queens Own Corps of Guides and then with a Gurkha Battalion (because he couldn't afford to be with the guides anymore!). It would be nice to know dates, places and if any of this is true. I have the commissioning scroll but it has no regimental number. I appreciate any help given, thank you for your time. sotonmate Posted 1 December , 2011 Share Posted 1 December , 2011 AA You may have four Battalions to choose from ! In April 1915 the 1/4;1/5;1/6/and 1/7 Bns landed in France. This soldiers Medal Card shows he landed on 13 April. It also shows his numbers and units served as 2774 DOW West Riding Regt ; 340699 (36 Bn) Northumberland Fus,and Lt in the Indian Guides. You will be able to get his first Battalion on landing from the original Medal Roll for the 1914-15 Star which is at Kew in WO329/2624 page 135.This was issued by the Northumberland Fusiliers but will show the DOWWRR unit served on first landing. Old Owl Posted 1 December , 2011 Share Posted 1 December , 2011 Hi AA, If your relation was living in Huddersfield when he joined up? then he would most probably have joined either the 1/5th or 1/7th Bns. The 1/4th was a Halifax Bn and the 1/6th was a Skipton/Keighley and district, Bn. Hope this helps, Robert
