mhifle Posted 1 December , 2011 Posted 1 December , 2011 Hi, Just saw this in todays Daily Telegraph. Regards Mark
centurion Posted 1 December , 2011 Posted 1 December , 2011 Think I'll wait for Haig's corkscrew to become available.
bushfighter Posted 1 December , 2011 Posted 1 December , 2011 Mark Many thanks for posting this. Harry
auchonvillerssomme Posted 1 December , 2011 Posted 1 December , 2011 Think I'll wait for Haig's corkscrew to become available. I have that, its sat on Douglas Baders wheelchair.
centurion Posted 1 December , 2011 Posted 1 December , 2011 I have that, its sat on Douglas Baders wheelchair. There was once a short con man in Portsmouth (well pre ww2) who it seems made a passable living selling Nelson's glass eye, despite the fact that Nelson never had one! Not that I'm casting any doubt on Aircraftman Shaw's pocket knife - far from it.
geraint Posted 2 December , 2011 Posted 2 December , 2011 I've often wondered how an auction house proves the provenance of a celebrity item like this. The item photographed by the Telegraph is in the auction house, and used as part of their publicity. They are therefore complicit with the owner. I know from my own experiences with local auction houses how easy it is to fool the porters and auctioneers and provide erroneous verbal provenance. Human nature never changes though! It's like being back in the middle ages with relic sellers selling chunks of the true Cross. Me? I've got Kitchener's shaving mug and electric razor...
centurion Posted 2 December , 2011 Posted 2 December , 2011 Me? I've got Kitchener's shaving mug and electric razor... Does it still have it's moustache trimming attachment? Actually whilst electric razors were not invented until the 1920s clockwork ones existed in Kitchener's day (probably more practical at the front anyway)
geraint Posted 2 December , 2011 Posted 2 December , 2011 He'd nicked it from a German. Had BRAUN scorched into the bakelite. Liked it so much he bought the company...
bushfighter Posted 4 December , 2011 Posted 4 December , 2011 Now that the repartee element has subsided to smirk into its mirrors, serious Members may be interested to learn more from the auctioneers: http://www.charterhouse-auction.com/2011/12/te-lawrence-carves-niche-at.html Harry
centurion Posted 4 December , 2011 Posted 4 December , 2011 Snide - very snide and very unecessary. Having seen the auctioneers tenuous provenance (I note that they daren't go beyond "believed to have been") I'd tend to go with Old Owl's comment
