leofric Posted 30 November , 2011 Posted 30 November , 2011 Where would I be able to access Absent Voters Lists for Loughborough and Shepshed (Leicestershire) and for Nottingham? Are these only available at County Record offices and not on-line? Is there anyone out there with access who could do a look-up on one or more of these please?
Adam Llewellyn Posted 30 November , 2011 Posted 30 November , 2011 Hello, I was at the Leics records office the other Friday and now have images of the complete county AVL's, so please fire away and i'll gladly have butchers for you. Regards. Llew.
leofric Posted 30 November , 2011 Author Posted 30 November , 2011 Thanks Llew, I'm looking for the following individuals (father and son): Tom Drury William Edward Drury They could be living at either 84 Wharncliffe Rd, Loughborough or Newlands, Leicester Rd, Shepshed. I'm also interested in anyone with the surname Warren that you may come across in Loughborough. Many thanks, Kevin
Adam Llewellyn Posted 1 December , 2011 Posted 1 December , 2011 Hello Kevin, 241249 Pte. William Edward Drury is shown as being with the 11th Btn and resident of Leicester Road, Shepshed. I'm afraid Tom is not shown on either the Shepshed or Loughborough list, I wonder if his wife could have moved after his death? The residence's on the Loughborough AVL are numbered, but 84 is not shown, the Shepshed list only gives a road or street, no numbers. Warren's shown on the Loughborough AVL are as follows, Albert 101401 CSM 170th Lab. co. 3, Park Road, Loughborough Thomas Ward 15998 L/Cpl 9th South Staffs 58, Rendell Street, Loughborough Walter 137932 Pte MGC rear of 19, Church Gate, Loughborough Thomas 153 C.M.M. 88th Squadron RAF G.P.O. Baxter Gate, Loughborough I've only just started doing what I'm doing with the Leics AVL's, so if I come accross Tom elsewhere I'll let you know. Regards. Llew.
leofric Posted 1 December , 2011 Author Posted 1 December , 2011 That's brilliant and confirms my theory that William Drury was in the 11th Leicesters. Tom was killed in 1918 and this obviously happened before the register was compiled, however if you do find him them please let me know. I also recognise a couple of those Warren entries. Many thanks for your help.
Adam Llewellyn Posted 1 December , 2011 Posted 1 December , 2011 Williams original 5th Battalion number would suggest he enlisted towards the end of June 1915, 25th or 26th looks likely. Was he transferred to the Pioneers because of him being a skilled tradesman of some sorts? With Toms date of death being in July 1918 I think he will be on a Absent Voters List somewhere. I've got Tom listed with an original Leicesters number of 15452, more than likely from SDGW, which would suggest an enlistment date in Loughborough on the 21st, 22nd or 23rd September 1914. Regards. Llew.
leofric Posted 2 December , 2011 Author Posted 2 December , 2011 I love the way you can be so precise about enlistment dates from the army number. I believe William was transferred to the Pioneer Battalion simply because the 2/5 Leicesters were badly beaten about by the Spring Offensive of 1918 and as a result were disbanded. His trade was electrician so I don't think this was a factor. According to their War Diary battalion members were scattered in all directions. iId be intersted to hear from anyone who knows something about the 11th Leicesters in Germany in 1918/19. Your date for Tom's enlistment is spot on. I'm not sure, but I think he joined up with Thomas Warren, who you have listed above. This was his brother in law. I have a picture of them in training in their blue uniforms with the South Staffs. I am extremely grateful to Llew for the information that he has provided as I thought that the with the loss of Williams Service record I would have no way of proving which battalion he ended up in. Is there anyone out there with access to the Nottingham Absent Voters List - I do have street addresses for a couple more family members.
Adam Llewellyn Posted 3 December , 2011 Posted 3 December , 2011 Good Morning Kevin, I've got the 11th Battalion diary complete up until the end of August 1919. With Christmas being just around the corner, if you can let me have a PM with your postal address, I'll gladly put Apr 1918 - Aug 1919 on a disc and drop it in the post to you. Regards. Santa.
