Skipman Posted 30 November , 2011 Posted 30 November , 2011 While researching men from Aberfeldy, quite a number seem to have been stretcher bearers. A couple were also members of the VAD before enlistment (I think?) Were the various local TF detachments encouraged to specialise in a certain skill? I know from talking to a ww2 veteran, that the Aberfeldy detachment, Territorials were infantry (platoon) while other villages had the mortar platoon etc. George (Dycer) mention this in another thread Here " The 8th Royal Scots, were pre-WW1, a geographically far flung Battalion but as members of the pre-WW1 "A" Company,my forebears were directed to/became proficient in the use of the Maxim Gun and as such went to War,in November 1914,or so the surviving photograph testifies. " Cheers Mike
dycer Posted 30 November , 2011 Posted 30 November , 2011 Mike, It does not help to answer "our" question but during my time in the TA,in the 1970's,although primarily "my" Company was a rifle one it had an attached Mortar Platoon whereas other Companies, again primarily rifle ones, had Anti-Tank Platoons. George
geraint Posted 30 November , 2011 Posted 30 November , 2011 Hi Mike 4th RWF TF experience was cross-battalion. A lieutenant responsible for jam tin grenade development collected likely lads throughout the whole battalion. Same with the lieutenant responsible for the machinegun team collecting men throughout the battalion for trhe new Lewis gun teams. Good to see the 8th RS and 4th RWF comparing experiences again George!
dycer Posted 30 November , 2011 Posted 30 November , 2011 Geraint, We Celts must be seen to be sticking together. George
