phil1963 Posted 29 November , 2011 Posted 29 November , 2011 Folks, I am currently researching those listed on a war memorial at a sports club in London and whilst most were in the Army, one is shown as RFC; Lieut. Harold Thomas NOAKES, kia July 27th 1917 attached to 32nd Sqd and one in the RAF; Arthur Burrell THORNE, kia May 18th 1918. The first is buried in Belgium but the second in Norfolk, England. Do the RAF keep records of RFC casualties or would it be a visit to Kew ----- and what chances of finding a photo and some brief career details would you think? Phil.
daggers Posted 29 November , 2011 Posted 29 November , 2011 Thorne: try this link: http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1918/1918%20-%200546.html [found by googling the full name; the same applies for Noakes. Both return several hits, including at least one thread on this forum] D
phil1963 Posted 29 November , 2011 Author Posted 29 November , 2011 Many thanks - found another two memorials that these cricketers are also listed on!!
Simon Birch Posted 30 November , 2011 Posted 30 November , 2011 The Noakes AIR 76 file can be downloaded here: http://www.nationala...1&resultcount=1 & the Thorne file is here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=8676604&queryType=1&resultcount=1 Both can be downloaded at £3.50 each. Thorne had a close call on 8th June 1917, while flying Pup number A6181 in 66 Squadron. He returned but his aircraft was badly shot up. Simon
David_Underdown Posted 30 November , 2011 Posted 30 November , 2011 Both will probably also have army officers' records in WO 339 or WO 374, particularly Noakes as he died before the creation of the RAF. Those will only be available at Kew
paul_adam Posted 2 December , 2011 Posted 2 December , 2011 Phil, Found this reference which may be of interest, seems to be the same Noakes http://www.stockwellwarmemorial.co.uk/names-index/Home/st-andrew-s-war-memorial/harold-thomas-noakes Paul
RaySearching Posted 2 December , 2011 Posted 2 December , 2011 Phil Photo and details of Noakes on the Lijssenthoek project here regards Ray
aengland Posted 9 April , 2012 Posted 9 April , 2012 Hi Phil How goes the research into Arthur Burrell Thorne? I live in the next village to where he is buried, and in fact am researching the men who are listed on that memorial. I can supply you with a photograph of his grave if you want it. His nephew was Major General Sir David Thorne (i/c Falklands at one point) and now, sadly, no longer with us. The family are far and few between. Which memorial is he listed on in London?.... I am intrigued I have some other 'stuff' on him if you are interested Andrew
