corisande Posted 24 November , 2011 Posted 24 November , 2011 Can anyone help with this man He appears on a list of (mainly) battalion intelligence officers in Ireland. The list is marked "Secret", and contains 9 names. The other 8 are genuine and findable. However with this chap I cannot find "Ditchford" in BMD or censuses, it is extremely rare name. And the other way of trying to find him is via "Hitchman Hall, Ipswich" which does not seem to exist either. Can someone with knowledge of Lincs Regiment suggest who he was, or can anyone come up with a typo on this that might solve it. The double "...itch..." in "Ditchford" and "Hitchman" looks suspicious
sotonmate Posted 24 November , 2011 Posted 24 November , 2011 C Is it worth a look at the WO338 Index of Officer Service Records ? I say this but am not optimistic as the only hit I got on a Ditchford in all WO records at Kew was a WO97 record for a soldier discharged around the time of Waterloo in 1815,and HE had an alias ! corisande Posted 24 November , 2011 Author Posted 24 November , 2011 Thanks for the suggestion. I had tried the main index and got nothing, but my skills with their indices is not great. I'll have another go where you suggest What I found odd was that both his name and his address were untraceable. I have never though come across an officer using an alias, but this chap is certainly in the frame for being the first.
NRP.HKP Posted 24 November , 2011 Posted 24 November , 2011 I suspect this is a typo for HITCHAM HALL, HITCHAM,Ipsich,Suffolk IP7 7NN,on the B 1115 Stowmarket to Hadleigh Road.It is a listed building,researching this could well turn up the disappearing Ditchfords.
corisande Posted 24 November , 2011 Author Posted 24 November , 2011 a typo for HITCHAM HALL, HITCHAM,Ipsich,Suffolk IP7 7NN Thanks Caistor, that looks like it, I should be able to find him now
corisande Posted 29 January , 2012 Author Posted 29 January , 2012 I have had another go at this man and still cannot find his correct name Thanks to Caisor's help above I found Hitcham Hall, Ipswich. However that unfortunately failed to unearth any "Ditchford"s. My notes on Lt RR Ditchford, such that they are - click The 1911 census shows Frank Grant and his family are the tenants. He is a University tutor, and his wife comes from Hitcham, but I could not find any link to Ditchfords from either her or the Hall I am fairly sure that "Ditchford" is another typo by the bloke who got "Hitchman" wrong, but having spent a few hours with wildcards on both Ancestry and TNA, I have not found anyone who could be "Lt R R Ditchford" in Lincolnshire Regt.
