Spirit level and case

Hi ,another junkshop find.this foot long spirit level,complete with case,case is marked 1917 with a W.D arrow.Is this just for normal use[carpentry etc]or would it have more of a weapons use?thanks,Paul.

Looks as if it was for general use, the sort of items sappers would use for all sorts of tasks. Those for use with weapons were usually in a metal frame and were often adjustable. Could still be a useful tool. Check its accuracy finding a level surface i.e one which your level says is level and turn the level end for end. If it still indicates a level surface it's OK.
