bushfighter Posted 23 November , 2011 Posted 23 November , 2011 Larks TEHRAN WAR CEMETERY & MEMORIAL The War Cemetery was built in 1962. There are now 412 Commonwealth burials of the 1914-1918 war, 13 of which are unidentified, commemorated in this site. There are 152 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war commemorated here. In addition there are also 14 non world war burials and 25 Foreign National burials. All the 1914-1918 burials in Tehran War Cemetery have been concentrated from the following cemeteries:- AKHBARABAD PROTESTANT CEMETERY (later known as Tehran Military Cemetery) CHASHMEH-i-ZULIAK ANGLO PERSIAN OILFIELDS CEMETERY (later known as Masjid-I-sulaiman Cemetery) HAMADAN MILITARY CEMETERY, KAZVIN BRITISH WAR CEMETERY, NAIBUND BRITISH CEMETERY, RESHIRE BRITISH CEMETERY, RESHT ARMENIAN CEMETERY, SHIRAZ BRITISH CEMETERY, and TEHRAN MILITARY CEMETERY. Included in the 1914-1918 commemorations were members of 'Dunsterforce', a British mission set up by Major-General Dunsterville in 1918. Their purpose was to organise the forces of the Transcaucasian Federal Republic (comprising Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia) to enable them to withstand a Turkish attack. Their task was impeded by constant civil war, and in May of that year, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia separately declared their independence. 'Dunsterforce' assumed a more direct military role when Baku was under threat of a Turkish attack. In August, 1918 reinforced by about 1000 British Infantry, it occupied Baku to prevent the port and oil-fields from falling under Turkish control. However the following month saw the evacuation of Baku by the British due to the superior numbers of the Turkish force. The British returned to Baku after the Armistice and remained there as an occupying force until September, 1919. http://www.cwgc.org/search/cemetery_details.aspx?cemetery=91700&mode=1 Harry

larkins12 Posted 23 November , 2011 Author Posted 23 November , 2011 Hi Thanks, from what i have been able to discover, the British, Turkish and Armenia soldiers were all buried in Baku, in an area called "Shehidler Hiyabani" which over looks the city, All these graves were destroyed by The "bolshevick's in 1920, Nothing remains of them. This area is now contains the remains of those who were massacared (all civilians) by the Russians on 20th January 1986, There is now a memorial erected 2005 to the British killed in 1918-1919, I will post a photograph later. Sadly many names are missing. Francis Larks TEHRAN WAR CEMETERY & MEMORIAL The War Cemetery was built in 1962. ICD Moffat Posted 27 November , 2011 Posted 27 November , 2011 Hello All, There were a number of Canadians attached to Dunsterforce. I don't know if any became casualties but here is a list taken from Library and Archives Canada (LAC) files. The actual file reference is at the top of the page. Note the LCol Warden's daily diary recording his entire time with Dunsterforce is online (I transcribed it from the original in LAC files). If you search J.W. Warden in Google it should come up. Here are the Canadian members of Dunsterforce. Only Non commissioned members have regimental numbers. Note Major Newcombe was attached to the Cossack force of Col Bicherakov and remained with his force officially even after he voluntarily became head of the Bolshevik forces in Baku and the region, thus Newcombe is the only Canadian soldier to officially serve with "Soviet" forces ever. MaureenE Posted 15 July , 2014 Posted 15 July , 2014 For background information, the FIBIS Fibiwiki has a page Norperforce, which also includes information about Dunsterforce http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php/Norperforce It includes a link to the diary of Lieut.-Colonel John Weightman Warden, mentioned by Ian Moffat in post 5 Cheers Maureen
