Hi everyone,

My Great Uncle John William Eldred.

Was a private in this regiment, his number(I think) was 8116

Died on 28/2/1917, and was buried at Varennes.

Was this battallion one of the City of London Regiments?

And where could I find out more on where he may have been when he was k.i.a.

New to all this, so please bear with me, and thank you in advance for any help given.

Lainie.

He was most likely severely wounded since he was evacuated from the front line, and died of wounds at a hospital area near Amiens.

I would strongly suspect that he was mortally wounded at Boom Ravine neat Petit Miraumont on 17-2-1917.

Thank you, I have kept a link for later to browse through.

Am still in the throws of reading the Long, Long Trail articles...So fascinating! Didnt know so many groups/batalions etc existed!

Neded more info on cap badges too, so that will be my next quest!

I have yet to read up on that incident, so thank you for your suggestion.

Stebie is,as ever correct I believe. John Wiliam Eldred Number 8116 had been 4315 in the Middlesex Regiment and presumably drafted into the 11th RF. The attack at Boom Ravine on 17th Feb 1917 was undertaken in wet weather, resulting in slippery ground difficult to cross. The Germans knew the attack was coming and so were prepared. The Battalion reported 2 Officers killed, 1 died of wounds and 11 wounded; of other ranks 36 were killed, 162 wounded and 69 missing. SDGW, with the benefit of hindsight, reports 93 men killed in action on the day and a further 22 died of wounds between 17th and 12th Feb. The next dates when men of 11th are recorded as being killed in action is 13th March.

Hope this adds a bit

Was your great uncle by any chance connected with Elveden, near Thetford. Researching their war memorial and I have a J Eldred about whom I know very little. He may well be this man

David, can you give a link to his service record or is your info from his MIC?
