Private Thomas Hall DLI/Duke of Wellington Regs

I'm trying to find information about Private Thomas (AKA Tom) Hall, for example when he joined the army and was posted overseas. It looks as if he joined to Durham Light Infantry as a private number 20937 and was then transferred to the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) regiment number 24382. He was killed on 14 June 1917. If there's anyone who can help fill in any of the gaps in this soldier's story, I'd be grateful. Thanks.

2937 hall would likely have been 6th DLI with coming from Consett - I'll check my list and see if I have him - IIRC there was a draft of men sent to the West Ridings,

I'm thinking that could be a typo for 20937.

Actually on looking my list he may have bucked the trend and not been a 6th DLI man - at the time 2937 was issued the 6th DLI were issuing numbers to surnames in alphabetical order and although I dont have a 6th man with that number I'd be expecting a surname starting with 'S'.

He also isn't recorded on the main consett war memorial.

EDIT:

I'm thinking that could be a typo for 20937.

That would explain it

Thanks for that. His DLI number was 20937, so I would be interested in knowing when he joined up and when he was transferred to the Duke of Wellington's.

I wonder why he's not on the main Consett memorial. His father made the effort to add a comment to the grave register at Fampoux; it's unlikely that he wouldn't have wanted his son's name to be recorded in his home town. I wonder, are there other smaller memorials in the town which might have him?

I'm from consett originally - There are numerous memorials in the surrounding area.

Do you know which part of consett he was from ?

His father was living at 5A Backstone Burn, Blackhill, Co. Durham when he entered his son's details on the IWGC register. Is there a memorial there?

My relatives lived in the same street around that time period.

There are a few memorials in the churches around there.

There were Hall's at number 1, 2 , 5A and 4 in 1901 - I have the census details if you PM me.

Is it possible that he was in DLI 12th (Service) battalion as they went to France on 25/08/1915 and he arrived there on 26th?

Hi,

20937 Private Thomas Hall served with B Company 13/Durham Light Infantry, most likely enlisted early September 1914 either in Consett or Newcastle, Consett men enlisted in both locations.

He went to France with his battalion on 25/8/15 and was wounded on 10 July 1916 as 23 Div were attacking Contalmaison.

He is mentioned in the casualty list in the Adjutant's diarys in the regimental Archives.

and will be in the nominal roll of my latest book.

Hope this helps.

regards

John
