brimacombe Posted 20 November , 2011 Posted 20 November , 2011 Hi Mike, Just had a cursory look through the MIC's and can't find a F Rose or F Rouse with a similar number (there is a 355 1st Glosters F Rouse KiA). Do you have any idea of the dates of his previous service - it might also help if you could a) give an indication of his age on his SWB papers (which might give some indication of WHEN he was previously in the army) a date of his SWB service and perhaps a scan of the picture... Regards Shawn
mikerose Posted 20 November , 2011 Author Posted 20 November , 2011 here is the first page of his service record his DoB is incorrect. i cant put a picture up atm im using the works pc
ss002d6252 Posted 20 November , 2011 Posted 20 November , 2011 From here - http://www.1914-1918.net/swb.htm 10th (Service) Battalion (1st Gwent)Formed at Brecon in October 1914 by the Welsh National Executive Committee. Moved by end of December 1914 to Colwyn Bay and attached to 130th Brigade, 43rd Division. 29 April 1915 : formation renamed 115th Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Moved to Hursley Park (Winchester) in July 1915 but thence to Hazeley Down. Landed at Le Havre on 4 December 1915. The details of service with the SWB would only show on a MIC if he served overseas with them - he'll also only have a MIC if served overseas, there'll not be one for home service.
ss002d6252 Posted 20 November , 2011 Posted 20 November , 2011 You may be able to find his earlier records here - http://www.findmypast.co.uk/search/army-service-records/all?redef=1
brimacombe Posted 20 November , 2011 Posted 20 November , 2011 I misinterpreted your initial post Mike - I assumed your man had re-enlisted AFTER WWI rather than before. Consequently the above two posts give a better indication. Certainly worth a look on Findmy past
mikerose Posted 20 November , 2011 Author Posted 20 November , 2011 thanks for your help i had a quick look for him on findmypast no luck yet
simon2 Posted 20 November , 2011 Posted 20 November , 2011 Any other scanned items of the attestation or the portrait may help as Shawn suggested. Simon.
mikerose Posted 20 November , 2011 Author Posted 20 November , 2011 hi now i am home and have access to his portrait, this is a cropped picture of him.
simon2 Posted 20 November , 2011 Posted 20 November , 2011 There are a couple of uniform experts in the ranks but I think it is dress uniform late 1800's early 1900's.
mikerose Posted 20 November , 2011 Author Posted 20 November , 2011 thanks for that that would link him to previous service just need to link the uniform to the glosters
ss002d6252 Posted 20 November , 2011 Posted 20 November , 2011 The glosters website doesn't list him as soldier in the 19th century but it does have a man for WW1. It doesn't seem to list men between 1900 and 1914 http://www.glosters.org.uk/soldier/30838
simon2 Posted 20 November , 2011 Posted 20 November , 2011 My theory, Red surge tunic, Gloucestershire Regiment collar dogs 1881 - 1938. Shoulder title white worsted on red (maybe). Belt buckle too blurred but standard shape. Simon. Man on left Colour Sregeant in full dress and on left wearing foreign service unifrom both c1899.
mikerose Posted 21 November , 2011 Author Posted 21 November , 2011 it seems to be a very good match if he served with the glosters between 1891-1914 would they have served abroad as he does not appear in the 1901 and 1911 cencus
simon2 Posted 21 November , 2011 Posted 21 November , 2011 Hi Mike, The 1st Battalion went to Malta in 1893 and then moved onto Egypt to take part in the Dongola Expedition 1896. The 2nd Battalion was serving in India and then Aden until 1894 when they returned home. Both Battalions fought in the Boer War the 1st Oct 1899 till the end of the war and the 2nd Jan 1900 till the end of the war. Battle Honours earnt ' Defence of Ladysmith ', ' Relief of Kimberley ', ' Paardeberg ', ' South Africa 1899-1902 '. The 4th + 5th Battalions also won the Battle Honour ' South Africa 1900-02 '. I don't believe they were involved in anything between 1902-1914. At the outbreak of the war the 1st Battalion was in Bordon and the 2nd in Tientsin, China. Simon.
