James Ivory

Hello all,

yesterday i was sent a picture of my GGFather from a long lost relative. Not only is this the first photo i have ever seen of him but to make it more interesting he is in uniform;his cap badge is like nothing ive seen before, though its not very clear.I knew of only one GGFather who fought in the great war(see my footnote)so to find another is really exciting.I found out a lot of information on my other GGFather so im hoping this great forum can help me again, although what i have is limited.

Name : James Ivory.

Birthplace : Dublin.(i assume,as this is where my Dad and his family are from)

Year born : 1877?? (making him 37 at the outbreak of war???)

He survived the war dying aged 80 in 1957,my relative believes.I will attach a photo when i can work out how to resize it.

Thanks in advance,

Anthony.

There is a man of about the right age in the RFA who was from living in London, but served in Ireland (counted as home).

He was married to Elizabeth Martin, and had two daughters at the time, Margaret and Mary Anne.

Any good?

IPT,

thanks for your reply, but this is not my GGF.He married a lady called Catherine(known as Kathleen, apparantly)nee Nolan,he had 3 sons:Val,James(my grandfather) and John and 1 daughter, Catherine.

Hard to say. Doesn't look like a harp.

You might be better posting the whole picture. There may be clues in the uniform.

I wasn't sure either but with a squint and it being on an angle it might just fit.

I agree though that the uniform would be helpful.

Sorry its took so long, thanks for all your replies.

My relative believes James was in the Royal Artillery;A driver, maybe?

Is there anyone who has access to Royal Artillery records that could kindly see if he was in the Regiment?

I know the capbadge isnt Royal Artillery,it almost looks like a shoulder title??? This at present i cant explain.

Thanks,

Anthony.

ss002d6252,

My relative says he had a son called George Valentine(Val),So that may have accounted for the G;however:-

IPT,

Thats interesting, maybe this is not my GGFather.I will need to obtain more information.

I wonder how many James Ivorys there were in the Great war?

Munster,

i cant locate my man from the Irish census, thanks for your help.

ss002d6252,

The Bedfordshire James Ivory won the DCM, so presumably, if it was him, you would know about such a medal?

Posted

Was George Valentine born in 1905 (on Valentine's Day)?

If so, it's bit of a mystery where the family were in 1911.

Posted

Steve,

Ive only recently found out about my GGFathers involement during the great war,so your probably correct,if he had of been awarded a DCM im sure we would have known.

Thanks for your help,i think i can eliminate him.

Anthony.

IPT,

Im not sure ,i will ask my relative if she knows.

I cannot find my GGFather or his family in the Irish census either,so i agree, its a mystery where they were.

thanks,

Anthony.
