ShirlD Posted 16 November , 2011 Posted 16 November , 2011 I am trying to help a friend with family research, and having some difficulty in putting together details of John Joshua Young. We know that is his full name, and we know that he died 31.05.1916, when the Queen Mary went down at the Battle of Jutland. He was described as a Gunner. He married Mildred G Brett and they have a picture of him on HMS Zulu, before he transferred to the Queen Mary. I cannot find him on any census lists, and we are trying to discover his history in the Navy. I would be grateful if anyone has any more details on this man. Cheers Shirley
Scritch Posted 16 November , 2011 Posted 16 November , 2011 Hi Shirley, I think this is your man, from the National Archives Royal Navy service records index: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=6951985&queryType=1&resultcount=1 As you can see he was born at Kingston, Hampshire, 6th August 1873. He also appears in the 1881 census, aged 8. He was living at 45, Prospect Road, Portsea, Hampshire, with his siblings Mary R. C. aged 5, and Sidney H. E. aged less than a year old. Their mother, Rebecca, aged 29 and described as a Steward's wife, was also living there too. Perhaps by later censuses he was already in the Navy, and serving abroad. Hope this helps Kind regards Richard
Scritch Posted 16 November , 2011 Posted 16 November , 2011 Additionally, as he held the rank of Gunner when he died, he also has an Officers Service Record held at the National Archives. Here is a link to the record: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/details-result.asp?Edoc_Id=7912750&queryType=1&resultcount=1 Richard
ShirlD Posted 16 November , 2011 Author Posted 16 November , 2011 Thanks for that speedy reply Richard. I have also been trying unsuccessfully to find crew lists, but the document you have given may yield something. Cheers Shirley
Scritch Posted 16 November , 2011 Posted 16 November , 2011 Hi Shirley, Hope those records help in your search for information. If you need it, the crew list for the Queen Mary at Jutland can be found here: http://www.naval-history.net/xDKCas1916-05May-Jutland1.htm Kind regards Richard
ShirlD Posted 16 November , 2011 Author Posted 16 November , 2011 I had found the Jutland lists, it was earlier ones I was trying to source. Hopefully these records will give clues or some details of his transfers. Thanks again, your help is much appreciated Cheers Shirley
ShirlD Posted 17 November , 2011 Author Posted 17 November , 2011 My friend has found and downloaded the documents, so is busy going through the information. Thank you again Cheers Shirley
