seaforths Posted 14 November , 2011 Posted 14 November , 2011 I am trying to trace this person through service records/MIC but nothing comes up: James Morrison, Born 26th March 1894. W.R.173915, Sapper, R.O.D, Royal Engineers. Joined at Garmouth 25th Nov 1913. Served in France; awarded 1st Class Classification Badges55. With so much information you would think he would be easy to find but I'm not sure if that is a service number or not. I have tried searching without the letters WR but that doesn't show anything either. He was one of my grandad's 5 cousins that served. I have managed to find the others on the National Archive site but not this one. I would appreciate any help from Pals. I also don't know what R.O.D stands for (Royal Ordnance Depot??). Many thanks Marjorie
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 14 November , 2011 Posted 14 November , 2011 Hi Marjorie:~ ROD Railway Operating Dept~~~ IIRC The "WR" prefix signifies "Waterways & Railways" I think he is probably this one!!!!, there is a slight discrepancy with ONE number, a "5" instead of a "3"......Link To NA Files viz: Below:~ Medal card of Morrison, James Corps Regiment No Rank Seaforth Highlanders 1497 Royal Garrison Artillery 360 Gunner Royal Garrison Artillery 365167 Gunner Royal Engineers 403945 Gunner Royal Engineers W.R.175915 Gunner HB
Hywyn Posted 14 November , 2011 Posted 14 November , 2011 He is shown as 175915 on a well known commercial site. Also Seaforth Highlanders 1497 and some RGA ones. Do you have access to it? Hywyn edit: to clarify. Same name has a MIC as 175915 etc
Bardess Posted 14 November , 2011 Posted 14 November , 2011 Hi Marjorie. One digit out - should read 175915. His MIC is here on TNA and here on Ancestry EDIT: Beaten
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 14 November , 2011 Posted 14 November , 2011 EDIT: Beaten ....But not defeated!!!
seaforths Posted 15 November , 2011 Author Posted 15 November , 2011 Thank you for your fantastic responses! I got the information from the Morayshire Roll and while I was searching I went back and checked it 3 times to make sure I hadn't made a mistake when I had copied it from the book. I now realise that the mistake is in the Roll! Given the size of the book, it is hardly surprising there would be a few typo errors in it, a 3 and 5 would be easily mistaken when typists were deciphering handwriting so lots of room for error. I came across the 1497 entry, which was thrown up when I was searching his brother John and followed it up - but decided because the 'WR' number wasn't right, it wasn't him. Now, I believe it is him and can't thank you all enough. I had managed to find information on my grandad and 4 of his cousins - he was the fifth and last. The letters 'W.R' and 'R.O.D' also now make a lot of sense as his pre/post war occupation was given as railway porter! Thank you all again Marjorie Sorry I should have added to my last as well as my thanks - have now accessed the records! Marjorie
