Hywyn Posted 14 November , 2011 Posted 14 November , 2011 William Williams M2/180637 ASC is shown in a local source as being in '644 HR Workshop'. I have had a look on LLT for this unit but unfortunately it's not listed. Assuming that this is a Heavy Repair workshop albeit it's not preceeded by MT (but his number idicates Motor?)could anyone please enlighten me as to where it was located. He received the Victory and British and no records that I can see. The prefix page on LLT is currently unavailable and I cannot find my own list so I would be grateful if someone could tell me the duties of M2 in ASC. TIA Hywyn
Terry_Reeves Posted 14 November , 2011 Posted 14 November , 2011 Hywyn 644 Heavy Repair Workshop (MT) supported 51st Siege Battery RGA. It was formed in the UK on 24th January 1916 and subsequently served in Alexandria and Ismalia Districts, Egypt. It was redesignated Palestine MT Unit in 1922. The unit war diaries are available in WO 95/ 4467,covering April 1916 to February 1918 and WO 95/ 4413 covering March to December 1918. TR
Hywyn Posted 14 November , 2011 Author Posted 14 November , 2011 Thank you for a prompt and informative reply Terry. Does the M2 signify what his duties might be? He was clerk in the Labour Exchange pre war. Hardly a job producing mechanics? Hywyn
Terry_Reeves Posted 14 November , 2011 Posted 14 November , 2011 M2 was Mechanical Transport. He could quite easily have trained as a driver. TR
