Please could you help me in the search for Samuel Charles Parish, service records on ancestry.co.uk

we have free access to the war records on there but i can not locate my great uncles service records, his medal card is there but nothing else can i fine,

sevice numbers are 55631 welsh reg and before that was 32237 norfolk reg

think he used Charles Parish in the welsh reg,

however medal cards use his full name with both numbers

thanking you

Only a third of service papers exist so they may not be available. Samuel is commemorated on the Loos memorial which gives his unit details and date he was killed.

You'll then need to check the Long Long Trail link at top of this site to help work out movements of his unit. Alternatively some nice person on this forum may be able to assist further.

Justin

You can get the Battalion War diary at National Archives (they are not very obliging when it comes to copying things, so you need to go yourself). Assuming he was in that battalion all the time, then you can follow what the battalion (rather than the individual) were doing every day

Don't give up on Ancestry records, if you know his age, and his address, and his next of kin then go through all the records there for men called both "Samuel Parish" and "Charles Parish". The indexing =on Ancestry is truly appalling, so you have to ignore that and look at each one.

The bad news is that very few records survived (far less than one third exist, perhaps half that) but if you trawl carefully you can often fine things. Also if he served before WW1 there is a chance that his records might exist on FindMyPast for the pre-war period.

When soldiers transfer battalions it is sometimes done as a group transfer, and we can follow the nmovements of the group by finding service records of others in the group.

Samuel Charles Parish was in a group numbered between 55611 and 55645.

John Bailey, Norfolk Regiment 27671, Welsh Regiment 55611

Frank E Leese, Norfolk Regiment 27665, Welsh Regiment 55612

Charlie Bliss, Welsh Regiment 55613, Labour Corps 406134, Kings Royal Rifle Corps 57854

Douglas R Barber, Norfolk Regiment 32277, Welsh Regiment 55614

Frank Belverstone, Norfolk Regiment 32358, Welsh Regiment 55615

Joseph G Cross, Norfolk Regiment 32323, Welsh Regiment 55616

Hebert T Clarkson, Norfolk Regiment 32322, Welsh Regiment 55617, Labour Corps 571226, Royal Army Service Corps NAC/461367

Herbert A Chapman, Norfolk Regiment 32324, Welsh Regiment 55618

Frederick W Dix, Norfolk Regiment 32329, Welsh Regiment 55619

Fred Dickens, Norfolk Regiment 32327, Welsh Regiment 55620, Army Ordnance Corps 047408

Henry Fellowes, Norfolk Regiment 32274, Welsh Regiment 55621

Riley Huxley, Norfolk Regiment 32264, Welsh Regiment 55622

George F Insall, Norfolk Regiment 32360, Welsh Regiment 55623

Percy G Jenner, Norfolk Regiment 32297, Welsh Regiment 55624

John J Johnson, Norfolk Regiment 32344, Welsh Regiment 55625

John Liddington, Norfolk Regiment 32211, Welsh Regiment 55626, Labour Corps 576445, Worcestershire Regiment 64341

Frederick T Laurie, Norfolk Regiment 32305, Welsh Regiment 55627

Albert Larrad, Norfolk Regiment 32273, Welsh Regiment 55628

John W Osborn, Norfolk Regiment 32352, Welsh Regiment 55629

William Plant, Norfolk Regiment 32236, Welsh Regiment 55630, Cheshire Regiment 53318

Samuel C Parish, Norfolk Regiment 32237, Welsh Regiment 55631

Bertie M Powell, Norfolk Regiment 32285, Welsh Regiment 55632

John Ranson, Norfolk Regiment 32265, Welsh Regiment 55633, King's Shropshire Light Infantry 36463

William T Richards, Norfolk Regiment 32280, Welsh Regiment 55634

Jess Russell, Norfolk Regiment 32241, Welsh Regiment 55635

Frederick C Smith, Norfolk Regiment 32245, Welsh Regiment 55636

Sidney E Stimpson, Welsh Regiment 55637, Army Ordnance Corps 047442

Ernest Titmarsh, Norfolk Regiment 32253, Welsh Regiment 55642, Army Ordnance Corps 047443

William G Warner, Norfolk Regiment 32256, Welsh Regiment 55643

Alfred S Wakeford, Norfolk Regiment 32308, Welsh Regiment 55644

Frank Warren, Norfolk Regiment 32269, Welsh Regiment 55645

The records of 55627 Frederick Thomas Laurie would suggest the following transfers:

- Trained with 27th Training Reserve Battalion

- Transferred to 3rd Battalion Norfolk Regiment on 30-4-1917, No. 32305

- Embarked to France via Folkestone & Boulogne on 8-6-1917

- Joined No. 14 Infantry Base Depot on 8-6-1917

- Joined No. 7 Infantry Base Depot on 15-6-1917

- Transferred to the Welsh Regiment and posted to 1/6th Battalion on 29-6-1917, and renumebred 55627

- Joined 1/6th Battalion Welsh Regiment on 7-7-1917

I would suggest that Samuel Charles Parish would have followed the same path as Private Laurie.

Private Lauries joined the Army in March 1917, which would probably around the same time as Samuel Charles Parish.

Steve.
