Trevster Posted 11 November , 2011 Posted 11 November , 2011 Hi, i am trying to find out more information about where one of my great grandfathers was awarded the Military Medal for Gallantry. He was in the Lincs 1st Battalion but got gassed and i think got transferred to the Service Corps. I know he was a stretcher bearer when he received the award, so does that mean he was in the Service Corps at that time? Also if that was the case are there war diaries for the Service Corps? Many thanks for any help, Trev.
sotonmate Posted 11 November , 2011 Posted 11 November , 2011 Trev In your other post it was confirmed that he was in the Lincolns when he won it,but could have been in the ASC when it was presented. At the time a soldier was asked if he wanted it officially presented or merely sent on to him.I have seen a few letters in service files which elect for the "no fuss" approach ! Sotonmate

Ron Clifton Posted 12 November , 2011 Posted 12 November , 2011 Hello Trev Your locxal library may have a copy of Army Service Corps 1902-1918 by Colonel Mike Young, or be able to get a copy for you. If you know which company of the ASC he served in, there is an appendix (Q or R, I think) which tells you where each of the companies' War Diaries are filed at the National Archives. Ron
Trevster Posted 12 November , 2011 Author Posted 12 November , 2011 Hi Ron, thanks for your reply. I do not know which company of the Service Corps he was in, all i've got is a Service Corps number from his Medal Index Card- 680241, if that would help at all.His original Lincolns number was 28454. Kind regards Trev.
Waggoner Posted 12 November , 2011 Posted 12 November , 2011 Trev, Given that Ancestry.UK is free this weekend, have you tried searching for his service record on it? If it survived the Blitz, it may give you the answers that you are seeking. All the best, Gary
Phil Evans Posted 12 November , 2011 Posted 12 November , 2011 For anyone else looking he is Albert Peck, Pte 28454 Lincolnshire Regiment and 680241 Labour Corps. Trev, his transfer to the Labour Corps would be in the period September to December 1918 (courtesy "No Labour, No Battle") Phil
Trevster Posted 13 November , 2011 Author Posted 13 November , 2011 Thanks Phil and Gary, most helpful, especially khowing the transfer period.Excellent.
